One of the most popular methods today is steam distillation, a technique in which hot steam is passed through aromatic plant materials such as flowers, leaves or bark. The heat from the steam releases the essential oils, and the steam containing the essential oils is condensed back into a liquid in the next step. The oil is then separated from the water, resulting in a pure and high quality oil.

Limitations of this process

However, steam distillation may not be suitable for some raw materials, such as jasmine, whose active ingredients may decompose when exposed to high heat, leading to the need to turn to other methods, such as solvent extraction or carbon dioxide extraction (CO₂ Extraction), which help preserve the quality of these active ingredients.
