Essential oil extraction

Essential oil extraction

Cold Pressed

Used to extract oil from the skin of citrus plants such as oranges, bergamot and lemons. The raw materials are pressed with a hydraulic press to extract the oil without heat, allowing the oil's aroma to be well preserved. Oils obtained by this method often contain certain compounds, such as Furanocoumarins, which can irritate the skin when exposed to sunlight. Therefore, some oils, such as bergamot oil, may need to be re-distilled to reduce these substances. This method is suitable for using oils at night or in areas without sunlight.

Solvent Extraction

Suitable for delicate flowers or plants such as roses, jasmine and lotus that cannot withstand the heat of steam distillation. The raw materials are mixed with a solvent that extracts the aromatic substances. After that, it goes through a filtration and separation process, resulting in "Absolute", which has a very natural scent. But the disadvantage is that there may be residue from the solvent. This type of oil is therefore more suitable for making perfumes than for use in treatment.

Liquid Carbon Dioxide Extraction (SFE-CO2)

A modern technology that combines the advantages of steam distillation and solvent extraction. The oil obtained has a high purity and the most natural scent. The process starts with the use of carbon dioxide in a liquid state under high pressure, extracting the aromatic substances from the raw material. When the pressure is reduced, the carbon dioxide evaporates, leaving only pure essential oil. This method is suitable for expensive raw materials such as jasmine or melissa.

Other methods besides the above mentioned methods, there are many forms of essential oil extraction such as:

  • Hydro Distillation: Boiling raw materials in boiling water

  • Enfleurage: Extracting the scent from fresh flowers using fat

  • Maceration: Soaking in oil or fat to extract substances

  • Phytonic: Using new solvents that are highly safe

These methods may not be widespread due to cost constraints or lower quality than the mainstream methods, but some are still used in specialized industries.

Khirivana focuses on methods that are pure, safe, and preserve natural scents to provide the highest quality to customers.
